The two towns are separate, with their own municipal offices, police dept, etc, but share a top-rated school system and library. Another difference is that most of the homes built in Chatham Twp were built after 1950 and on larger, suburban-style lots (generally 1/3 to 1/2 acre). Although ideally located to utilize the train hub of Summit for a sweet, short commute (most homes are within 10 minutes or less of the Summit station), Chatham Twp does not enjoy it's own train station and parking at the Borough station is not permitted for Township residents. However, many people feel the slight inconvenience of driving to Summit is overcome by the more frequent schedule of trains from Summit, including some express trains, making the commute to the NJ Gold Coast and NYC just as convenient.
