No wonder folks dream about owning a home or property in Chatham Borough - a bucolic setting, small-town atmosphere, top tier schools, proximity to world-class shopping and health care, plus a sweet commute to the Jersey Gold Coast and Manhattan make this a very desirable and superbly charming town to live in. The average price of a home in 2008 was $669,301 with 84 single family homes, condos and townhomes selling during the year.
Chatham Borough was settled in the early 18th Century and has an active town center including charming shops, casual eateries and award-winning restaurants as well as a public library, several service establishments, parks and tennis courts.
I lived in the Lafayette Section for over 5 years and rarely locked the door to my home. I enjoyed my early morning walks through the tree-lined streets, the easy access to the train to New York City, it's quietness (I joked that the sidewalks were rolled up just after dusk) but also it's proximity to bustling Summit, Millburn and Morristown.
Other notable neighborhoods in Chatham Boro are the Washington Section, the Manor Section, and the Village Section. Most homes are vintage. That means they have a lot of charm but may lack some of the more modern conveniences - ie: walk-in closets are rare. However, many homes have been renovated and expanded so that at certain price points the conveniences surely exist.
